Businesses Add iPads to Their Briefcases
Some Companies, Which Barred the iPhone, Build Apps for Tablet Computer and Give Apple Gadget to Employees.
When Apple Inc.'s first iPhone came out in 2007, many companies told their employees that the device wasn't appropriate for the workplace. The iPad is a different story.
The company's tablet-style device seems to be sidestepping the resistance that the iPhone and other consumer-oriented devices have faced in the corporate environment. Indeed, many businesses have raced to snap up iPads.
One example is the Chicago law firm Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal LLP, which banned the iPhone when it first came out yet preordered 10 iPads in the run up to the tablet's release in April.
"We made sure that we knew as much about these devices as possible," said Michael Barnas, the firm's director of application services. The technology department now offers access to its internal systems for more than 50 iPad-toting attorneys, and anticipates issuing iPads as an alternative to laptops as soon as next year.
Apple, which said it sold more than three million iPads through the end of June, attributes some of the device's success to businesses. The Cupertino, Calif., company's Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook said in July that "very surprisingly" half of the Fortune 100 are testing or deploying iPads.
More than 500 of the 11,000-plus applications built specifically for the iPad are in the business category. A free app from Citrix Systems Inc., which allows people to access internal corporate programs from the iPad, has been downloaded more than 145,000 times.
"Everyone in IT is jumping on this one," said Ted Schadler, an analyst at Forrester Research. "Rather than wait for people to start complaining they're saying why don't we get a few of them in and see what they are good for."
Companies have often imposed policies against consumer-oriented technologiesranging from thumb drives to Web-based email accountsbecause of worries that include keeping corporate data secure and other impact on internal computing systems. But many employees defied rules and used these tools anyway, partly out of a belief they improved productivity, said Mr. Schadler. In many cases, IT departments eventually relented and relaxed their rules.
Businesses are behaving differently with the iPad, in large part because the new device is starting out as more of a known quantity from a technical standpoint. The iPad runs the same operating software as the iPhone, which has been enhanced with a number of business-friendly features.
The iPhone, at the outset, faced the hurdle that it didn't work with Exchange, the Microsoft Corp. email software that is a mainstay of the business world. Nor could information-technology managers remotely erase data on the handset in the event it was stolen or lost.
But Apple has addressed these and other issues, including the ability for companies to encrypt information on iPhones and set up secure ways for employees to connect to corporate networks. The latest version of the operating system used by the iPhone and iPad adds features that make the devices easier for a tech department to manage, including the ability for businesses to distribute internally developed apps without going through Apple's App Store.
IPads, with list prices ranging from $499 to $829, are also less expensive than the laptop computers most companies buy. They also have advantages over laptops for certain chores, such as when employees work standing up or give demonstrations.
For example, Mercedes-Benz Financial, which provides loans and leases for Daimler AG, has equipped some dealerships with an iPad loaded with its app. The goal is to begin the credit-application process while customers are standing near a vehicle.
Bausch & Lomb Inc., which makes eye-care products, built its own iPad app for its salespeople. The company said it had about 50 employees using iPads in the field within a week and a half of the device's release.
One selling point is that the iPad starts up much more quickly than laptops and has a longer-lasting battery. "We don't get a lot of time in front of a customer," said Simon Woods, Bausch & Lomb's vice president of global technologies and applications.
When the iPhone came out three years ago "many of us were skeptical" that it could be a business tool, said Sean Chai, senior IT manager at Kaiser Permanente, the health-care organization based in Oakland, Calif.
But when the iPad was announced, Kaiser preordered a pair, and it has since been testing them in a 37,000-square-foot technology lab. Among the uses so far are viewing medical images such as X-rays and CT scans, and accessing medical records through a trial version of an iPad app developed by the electronic-record system's maker.
Kaiser is also testing a tablet specifically designed for hospitals, but so far is impressed by the iPad. "Apple didn't design this for the health-care industry," said Mr. Chai. "But it's a tremendous form factor."

iPad the right fit for sumo wrestlers
Japans sumo association to distribute iPads to wrestlers who have trouble using cellphones as a result of large hands.
Japan's ancient sport of sumo is embracing the latest high-tech, with its governing body set to distribute Apple's iPad to wrestlers who often struggle with smaller cellphone keypads due to their giant hands.
The sumo association said it will hand out iPads to Japan's 51 stables, or the clubs the wrestlers belong to, with the aim of improving communication among the roly-poly grapplers after some in the past had missed information sent by fax or telephone.
We will hand out the newest iPads to all the sumo stables to swiftly communicate what we need to, association vice chairman Hiroyoshi Murayama said.
The iPad tablet PC, which starts at 48,800 yen ($570) in Japan, was likely chosen because many stablemasters do not use computers and wrestlers are not good at punching in messages on their mobile phones with their big hands, Jiji news agency said.
Sumo is trying to overhaul its image after being rocked by a series of scandals including an illegal baseball gambling racket, assault and drug use.

OS: Android
Screen size: Unknown (at least to meIm not positive that the photo here is of this particular Lenovo device)
Price: Unknown
What else: VentureBeats story on LePad mentions another Lenovo device whose fate is unclearthe U1, which is one-half netbook, one-half tablet. Its not in this list because it has a physical keyboard.
More info: Heres a Reuters story.
MSI WindPad 100
Availability: This year
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium with a Wind Touch interface layer
Screen size: 10?
Price: Approximately $499
What else: A photo of the side of the device at Trusted Reviews makes it look terrifyingly thick.
More info: Joanna Stern of Engadget shares some first impressions (incredibly sluggish).
MSI WindPad 110
Availability: This year, or possibly never, depending on which MSI employee you ask
OS: Android 2.1
Screen size: 10?
Price: $399?
What else: As you can see from the photos, the industrial design is different from MSIs Windows-based WindPad 100.
More info: TweakTown has a video hands-on.
Marvell Moby Tablet
Availability: This year
OS: Android
Screen size: Im not sure (and it might vary)
Price: Starting at $99
What else: This isnt a specific productits Marvells reference design for extremely low-cost tablets which will be built by other companies using Marvell chips. The company hopes resulting products will be affordable enough for use by public schools.
More info: Hey, I was the first person to write about Moby (although at the time I didnt know the code name or the $99 price point).
Motorola-Verizon TV tablet

But the Notion Ink site has few details and the whole project has a slightly vaporous feel at the moment.
More info: Slashgear went behind the scenes at Notion Ink.
OLPC XO 3.0

OS: Linux with a next-generation version of the Sugar user interface, Id imagine
Screen size: The device itself is 8.5? by 11? and all screen (and 1.4? thick)
Price: Theyre shooting for $75
What else: This isnt an iPad rivalits a successor to the $100 laptop (which costs more than $100) for kids in developing nations. Its also not a sure thing, considering that the OLPC Foundation showed off an OLPC 2.0 concept in 2008, then decided not to build it. Nicholas Negroponte describes the XO 3.0 as aspirational, which I assume is a code-word for this is a cool concept which we hope we can build by the time 2012 rolls around.
More info: XO 3.0 is years from intended production, but the OLPC press release already says its a breakthrough advance.
Onkyo Windows Slate

What else: RIM isnt talking, but Bloomberg seems pretty sure of a bunch of details.
More info: I said that the BlackPad will presumably run RIMs own BlackBerry OS. But theres scuttlebutt that it runs Androidwhich doesnt seem like a completely nutty idea.
Samsung Windows Slate
Availability: This year
OS: Windows 7
Screen size: Unknown
Price: Unknown
What else: Samsung is another company mentioned in Steve Ballmers slide on upcoming Windows tablets. With so many supposedly on the way, itll be fascinating to see how much room the manufacturers have to give any specific WinSlate much personality of its own. For what its worth, Samsung makes some nifty netbooks.
Sony Windows Slate
Availability: This year
OS: Windows 7
Screen size: Unknown
Price: Unknown
What else: Another Ballmer-slide slate. All things being equal, shouldnt Sony have as good or better a chance as any company of building a tablet that could compete with the iPad in terms of raw industrial-design polish?
The $35 Indian Tablet
Availability: Mid-2011
OS: Linux. Or maybe Android.
Screen size: Unknown (at least to me)
Price: Um, $35? In theory, they might eventually cost ten bucks apiece.

More info: Heres Toshibas own write-up of the W100.
Toshiba Windows Slate
Availability: This year
OS: Windows 7
Screen size: Unknown
Price: Unknown
What else: Yes, another slate from Ballmers presentation. Toshiba is one of the few companies left that still offers a full complement of Windows-based Tablet PCs.
Okay, thats enough for now, although I could go on. (Steve Ballmers slide mentioned ten more Windows slates that are supposedly on the way, mostly from Asian suppliers.)
Are you genuinely excited by any of these? Do you think any will be breakout hits? If I were Steve Jobs, I wouldnt be rattled by by of them, although details are so scant on many that its impossible to form an opinion, period.
I already mentioned that I found the Cisco Cius intriguing; Notion Inks Adam also stands out from the pack. Im itching to learn details about HPs WebOS device. And I remain extremely skeptical about Windows 7 as a tablet operating systembut Im willing to be pleasantly surprised

What else: Toshiba isnt pitching this new model in its venerable Libretto line as an iPad killer. Instead, it says its a concept PC which shows off technologies that might become common in future machines.

Apple to launch upgraded iPad with Cortex-A9-based CPU in 2011, says Digitimes Research
Apple is set launch an upgraded 9.7-inch iPad adopting a new ARM Cortex-A9-based processor and 512MB RAM in the first quarter of 2011. Meanwhile, the company will also launch a 7-inch iPad using the Cortex-A9 processor and an IPS panel with a resolution of 1024768, according to Digitimes Research senior analyst Mingchi Kuo.
As for the CDMA iPhone, Pegatron Technology is expected to start mass production in December and will supply to both US-based Verizon Wireless and China-based China Telecom. The CDMA iPhone's back plate will be forged from metal materials and will feature an integrated antenna, according to Digitimes Research.
Verizon is expected to announce the product at CES 2011 and will start shipping in January 2011. The sales ratio of GSM and CDMA iPhones in 2011 is expected to reach 65:35, Digitimes Research out.
In addition, Apple is also set to launch a new Apple TV using AMD's Fusion solution and will not include a hard drive. The new device will adopt a user interface similar to the iPhone with support for social networking websites, network multimedia and the App Store. Mass production of the device will start in December, Digitimes Research noted.

Rumors: iPad Mini and iPhone 5 coming soon?
We're still probably a month or two away from Apple's annual fall iPod unveiling, but the rumor mill has already begun to churn, with iLounge posting a story with the rather sensationalistic title, "Leaked Details On 2010-2011 iPods, iPhone 5, Bumper 2 + iPad mini."
Naturally, there's an anonymous source involved and iLounge suggests we take it all with a grain of salt, because, well, the source's "accuracy level is very high but not perfect." Here are particulars on the alleged leaked details:
*
Apple is set to release three new iPods, including an new iPod Nano, iPod Touch, and a possible replacement for the beleaguered iPod Shuffle that would incorporate a small 1.7-inch touch screen. The source didn't have anything to offer on whether the new iPod Touch will have a built-in camera, but that seems to be the main question of the hour on the Touch front.
*
Once again, rumors of a smaller iPad with a 7-inch screen are surfacing. iLounge's source claims the smaller iPad is "substantially finished and will be ready for announcement either later this year or early in 2011. Apple has been prototyping devices with screens of this size for a long time--quite possibly predating the original iPhone." We always liked the idea of a smaller, cheaper iPad that's more pocket friendly, so we hope this is true. But we're wondering if Apple will do anything this year that might slacken the demand on the current iPad, which continues to sell very well.
*
Due to the antenna issues, Apple may be coming out with a fifth-generation iPhone sooner than many would have anticipated (early 2011). iLounge, like us, is discounting this rumor simply because the iPhone 4 remains in high demand despite all the negative publicity. Of course, while we're spreading rumors, one might postulate that the next-generation iPhone the source mentioned is really the rumored Verizon iPhone. (You see how easy it is to perpetuate rumors).
*
The last rumor isn't all that sexy but probably has the most truth to it; it involves Apple allegedly developing less expensive all-silicone Bumper cases to distribute to consumers as part of its iPhone 4 Case Program.

The Holly and the iPad: Tablets are Top of the Christmas List
-- Tablets to outsell netbooks 2:1
-- Kinect takes gaming to a new level
-- 3D Christmas
LONDON --Electrical retailer DSG international plc, owner of Currys and PC World, today revealed the ten big technologies for Christmas 2010.
With new hardware due for the gaming market, the end of the megapixel arms race, 3D technology finding its way into new categories and the arrival of the tablet, buyers at the retailer are backing a variety of exciting new products ahead of the festive season.
Tablets take off
According to the retailer, the iPad, launched through Currys and PC World earlier this year, is expected to be the most popular of the 5,000 plus products on its shelves this Christmas. With other manufacturers due to launch rivals to the iPad later in the year, DSGi expects tablets to be outselling netbooks by two to one by December. iPads start at 429 pounds Sterling.
Jeremy Fennell, DSGi said: "There is no doubt that the iPad is going to be the number one Christmas gift this year. It has already proved incredibly popular and with even more accessories launching it's only going to make a must-have technology even more attractive. There will be choice beyond Apple by Christmas but it's hard to see anyone toppling their dominance in the short term."
Gaming steps forward
In gaming, Microsoft's Kinect for XBox 360 is expected to be the biggest seller. Hitting the shelves in November, it takes gaming to the next level. The hands free motion control sensor allows gamers to totally immerse themselves in the experience by making your body the controller with any movement made replicated on screen. It also has face and voice recognition technology which enable, among other things, very advanced social gaming and videoconferencing. The Kinect will retail at 129 pounds.
Huw Crwys-Williams, category director from DSGi said: "This product (the Kinect) is the biggest step forward in gameplay since Wii. This technology takes gaming to a new level and, like the Wii, broadens the appeal of gaming to the whole family. It is backwards compatible and will work on all Microsoft Xboxes and around 15 new titles will be launched that have been designed around Kinect. We are very excited about this product and expect it to be right at the top of the technology wishlist for people this Christmas."
Christmas in 3D
The retailer also believes many of us will be seeing Christmas in 3D this year as the technology works its way across different products. By December, 25 per cent of the TVs at PC World and Currys will be 3D and with Sky planning the launch of its 3D channel along with numerous movie titles due for release in the format, demand is expected to be high. More 3D cameras will also arrive this winter and there will be more titles for the PS3, which already has 3D capability, including the hugely anticipated Gran Turismo 4 which will also be in stores by December.
E-readers go large
E-readers once again will be in demand and DSGi will have more than 20 different models on sale for Christmas, ten times the amount available for Christmas 2009, starting at around 79.99 pounds.
Digital Cameras zoom in
The digital camera category has also seen significant innovation. With the end of the megapixel race, zoom has become a key feature, particularly for smaller cameras. There are several products now offering greater zoom compared to the standard x3. The Panasonic TZ9 with it's 12x optical zoom is the one to watch.
In addition, manufacturers have developed their own features in a bid to differentiate from the competition. This Christmas, the retailer is anticipating major demand for Casio's Make Up Mode camera, the Z335 (119 pounds), which allows the user to improve pictures on camera by removing blemishes or wrinkles. This is up against Sony's Sweep Panoramic feature on the W390 (199 pounds) which allows extended landscape pictures to be taken and the dual screen from Samsung which makes it a lot easier to take self portraits using the screen on the front of the camera to set the shot.
MiFi on the move
Other technologies that are expected to be in demand include Mi-Fi. Mi-Fi Mobile Broadband from 3 is like a personal WiFi Hotspot. The pocket sized MiFi, enables up to five devices to wirelessly access the Internet at the same time, wherever you have mobile phone reception. Unlike a normal Mobile Broadband dongle, it doesn't require a USB port, so can be used to access the internet on your iPad or iPod Touch as well as your laptop or netbook. Available now on Take It Away for 54.99 pounds including the first 15 pounds credit or Pay As You Go from 49.99 pounds.

The company Of apple assumes that for the relatively recently represented plane-table of iPad in a few months it was possible to recapture the substantial part of the market for devices for reading of the electronic books. LG overwhelmed by iPad display orders
Apple isn't the only one caught off guard by the demand for its iPad. The company that makes the displays for the touch-screen tablet is too.
Last week, LG's CEO Kwon Young-Soo said his company is having trouble filling orders for iPad displays, even though his factories are running at "full capacity".
"Demand (from Apple) keeps growing and we can't meet it all," Kwon said, during a call to report the company's quarterly earnings.
LG last year secured a US$500 million contract to supply Apple's LCD displays.
Apple has sold almost 3.3 million iPads since early April, and units have been back-ordered for most customers almost from the first day of sales. Apple says it was surprised by consumers' interest, particularly consumers who aren't usually early adopters of technology, in the iPad.
"Both (the iPad) and the iPhone 4, we had backlogged at end of last quarter," Apple COO Tim Cook said last Tuesdayduring its earnings call. "We are selling both of those products as fast as we can make them."
Cook did not mention that display supply was as tight as it apparently is. LG's Kwon said he is considering increasing production of iPad displays, but that LG won't be able to make enough until early 2011.
The volume of early iPad sales seems to be surprising everyone. After Apple reported the sales numbers, several tech analyst firms said they had to drastically adjust their forecasts for touch-screen tablet sales for the year as a result.

@ paidContent Mobile: Live NBA Games Coming To iPad This Fall
We anticipate well have our live streaming games available on iPad in the fall, NBA Digital SVP and GM Bryan Perez told our paidContent Mobile conference on Tuesday.
Perez said the NBA is now ready to consolidate its mobile strategy, after initially rolling out a wide array of apps.
This (mobile growth) is happening so quickly, we needed to test as many business models and pricepoints as possiblefree app, paid app, team appevery single team across three platforms (iPhone, Android, Blackberry).
Im not sure the engineering team would want to go through it again, but its proved to be terribly valuable ... Weve gained a lot of knowledge. So youll see us rationalize those platforms, create a bit more elegance and bring all that learning together. Well still maintain some form of team branding because people are fans of the team first.
The NBA started live streaming to iPhone and Android back in October.
Some highlights from paidContent Mobiles The Strategy Game panel:
BBC.com Americas SVP Miranda Cresswell:
On HTML5 video and the BBC News iPad app: We are figuring out a way to make BBC web video available on the iPad. We have re-cut our plan to make sure we can get it done as fast as possible. I think its the publishers responsibility to make sure the content is available.
On the $12.99-a-quarter BBC Listener subscription radio app: Close to an hour on session length for that app, which is phenomenal.
On traffic: In the past three months, weve doubled our mobile web impressions thanks to iPhone and Android consumption.
Verizon business development executive director Jennifer Byrne:
On data consumption: On Droid X, were seeing something like 5x the data usage of any other device.
On apps vs web: The real tipping point for the browser will be 4G because it will literally be your computer in your pocket ... quasi-instantaneous - thatll be the point we see even more activity on the browser side.
On getting more open: While we may have had the first app store, GetItNow, weve learned a lot, with the watershed being the iPhone. Its a drastic change from the walled garden stage to the open approach. Its been a very big shift. Verizon has embraced it, Byrne said. Weve seen a tremendous response - so its validated the decision.
Zagat Survey co-founder and co-chair Nina Zagat:
The guide was an iPad launch partner and a partnership on restaurant reviews with Foursquare: Its developed in a way that were able to bring Zagat.com together with Foursquare. We interview people who become mayors.
Full circle: Nina Zagat likened the publishers mobility efforts to the portable guide we created back in 1982. Likewise, our own Staci D. Kramer called Zagat the original user-generated content.
Augmented reality urban guides? Not quite yet, Zagats mobile exec Ryan Charles contributed: Augmented reality is good but not greatwere reaching the limits of the technology - its interesting and definitely somewhat gimicky, but it can be effective.

Apple iPads Outsell Mac Laptops
Apple has released results for the quarter ended 26 June 2010. Sales of Mac computers continued to grow, reaching an all time high of nearly 3.5m, of which over 71 per cent were laptops, continuing the long term trend towards portable computers. Cumulative sales of iOS devices (iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch) reached 100m; including the following in the quarter:
* iPhone sales grew 61 per cent year-on-year to 8.4m, including over 1.7m iPhone 4 devices, which were launched just three days before the end of the quarter
* Quarterly iPod sales were down year-on-year from 10.2m to 9.4m
* iPad sales totalled 3.27m
iTunes generated over $1bn in the quarter, up 25 per cent year-on-year. The app store now offers over 225,000 apps, of which the company says over 11,000 are specific to iPad. As usual, the company revealed no data on music or video sales.
Analysis
The iPad sales numbers speak for themselves. Despite launching into a product category that has failed to live to the hype for the best part of a decade, the iPad is already outselling Apple laptops, even though this quarter produced the highest sales to date of Mac laptops in the company's history (2.5m, up by 41 per cent year-on-year). In terms of revenue, the iPad and related products generated $2.2bn, or 13.8 per cent of Apple's quarterly revenue, which was more than both the iPod ($1.5bn) and desktop computers ($1.3bn).
Apple's only year-on-year decline in unit sales came from the iPod. Here, the more expensive iPod Touch continues to cannibalize sales of lower-tier iPod products. iPod Touch sales grew 78 per cent and this is reflected in 4 per cent year-on-year growth in iPod revenue. As Screen Digest has previously discussed, the declining sales of lower-tier iPods is in line with the saturation of personal media player markets, while the additional functionality of the iPod Touch (in particular gaming) will continue to keep this model afloat in the near term.

Strong iPad, iPhone demand causing tight touch panel supply
Strong channel demand for Apple's iPad and iPhone has resulted in tight supply of touch panels, and with the IT market entering the third quarter, the traditional peak season, the pressure is expected to continue rising, according to sources with touch panel suppliers.
The sources said suppliers are now trying to increase output by improving yield rates. They are also expanding their production lines, with the new capacities expected to go online at the end of third quarter and in the fourth quarter, the sources said, adding that their overall capacities will still not be sufficient to satisfy all demand, market sources added.
Apple shipped 8.4 million iPhones in the second quarter of 2010, down slightly from 8.75 million units in the first quarter, and iPad shipments in the second quarter reached 3.27 million units.
Apple shipped about 17 million iPhones in the first half of 2010, and is expected to ship over 30 million iPhones for the year, up from 25 million units in 2009, the sources said, adding that iPad shipments for the year are expected to exceed 12 million units in 2010.
