Proper games on mobile phones have been a godsend for commuters, kids and, well, everyone else, too. But which games have topped the charts on Ovi Store in the latest count? And, more intriguingly perhaps, which countries put the most time into mobile gaming? Hint: I�m British and mostly proud of it, but I�m not sure that the results below represent our finest hour�

The new generation of Symbian devices has seen a real shift in the numbers downloading and playing mobile games, thanks to a better Ovi Store perhaps, but also better games and the graphics acceleration built into the devices. But which are the most popular on the new devices? Here they are, according to the latest figures from the stats-fiends at the Store:

But what of the top countries for gaming? Well, according to the stats we�ve received, which tracked only Nokia N8 users, it goes like this. These are the countries that downloaded the highest percentage of the total number of games:

UK 13.3 percent
India 10 percent
Italy 7.7 percent
Germany 6.6 percent
China 5.5 percent
Russia 5.2 percent

The UK is in the number one spot for something, for once! But we�re a tiny country compared to most, so I wonder why we�re such big mobile game consumers? My guesses:

We�re relatively well-off, compared to a lot of the world, so more smartphones generally.
We got the Nokia N8 fairly early compared to some countries: the results may change a lot in the coming months.
A lot of us, especially around London, have long, boring commutes on public transport.
Unlimited, flat-rate data contracts are now pretty standard.
According to the information I�ve been able to gather, the UK is already a nation of heavy computer and console gamers.

Brand Challenge
The GSMA is creating a competition focused on mobile application developers creating "brand apps" for a select number of global consumer brands. Developers will compete by creating customised mobile apps for the participating brand sponsors based on the objectives and guidance provided by the individual brands. The primary goals of the Brand App Challenge are to create networking and business opportunities which benefit the brands, application developers and the broader mobile ecosystem, as well as tapping the creativity and mobile application developer community to address brand and industry challenges.

The competition starts late fall 2010 with the finalists being named approximately one month before Mobile World Congress 2011. The Brand App Challenge winners will be announced as part of the Mobile World Congress conference programme and will receive cash awards for their winning efforts. Android Gets App-Switching Eye Candy: Visual Task Switcher Now Available On The Market

One of the most vaunted features of webOS was its decidedly pretty multitasking interface. Users could invoke an overlay of thumbnail �cards� of their running applications and switch to or close them.

Fresh onto the Android Marketplace is Visual Task Switcher. Continuing on from some progress made earlier this year (although probably not using the same method), this application grants you thumbnail application switching. While not as polished as Palm�s version, this is an encouraging step towards that alluring goal.

Users can switch to a running application by tapping the thumbnail, or kill it by long-pressing.

Visual Task Switcher allows multiple pages of grid thumbnails which can be scrolled through by swiping. Users can also close running applications by long-pressing on the corresponding images and tapping Force Stop. There are currently no settings to speak of; just choose your application or close the switcher. Some users have reported problems with it not recognizing custom launchers, but ADW is working fine on my own setup.

Users of CyanogenMod 6 can set this as their [HOME] long-press application by enabling Settings > CyanogenMod Settings > Input Settings > Long-press home settings > Use custom application and choosing Select custom application > Applications > Visual Task Switcher. Those not running custom ROMs with the aforementioned feature can still set it to appear with a tap of the [HOME] key, where pressing [HOME] a second time brings you to your desktop.

The application was only released yesterday, so there is obviously plenty of room for improvement, but it�s good to see Android gaining some tricks from its prettier siblings.

Oh, the bad news? It ain�t free. $1.99 for the ad-free version. Since VTS doesn�t have any screens besides the switcher page to speak of, the ads are right in there with your thumbnails. Perhaps once it gets a settings screen, the adverts will be transferred to there instead� one can hope.

The new "On the Move" widget (release date: August 23, 2010) allows Android smartphone users to compose and preload customized messages that can be sent as automated responses to incoming text messages. With the service, instead of reading and responding to text messages while driving or otherwise occupied, smart phone users can activate the service and let the widget respond for them, functioning much like an automated e-mail response.
The service is free as part of State Farm's updated Pocket Agent� for Android application.

Nevertheless, we were able to turn all that into a high-quality, exciting game, as even the folks at toucharcade declared (a great honour!). You see, promotional games can be quite entertaining, and so you can look forward to at least two more free casual games, that will be launched by this summer.

Of course, this year, we aren�t just developing ad games for iPhone and iPad and revamping existing iPhone games for other smartphones; we are also working on several completely new titles. With a racing game that has music as an essential component, we are entering new territory. We can�t tell you too much, but the first playable version caused quite a sensation both in-house and with marketing partners.

Along with our iPhone and iPad developments, we also want to put out feelers towards Android this year. As with the iPhone before, we will first port our casual games, like Burning Tires�, to get a feel for the new platform. If the effort proves worth the trouble, we will definitely follow up with more titles. Beyond that, we are working on a AAA title closely together with Nokia featuring OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics for a large screen.
Reunion with Keith on iPhone, iPad and Nokia Smartphones

It�s been at least a year since we ported our most important brand to the iPhone: Galaxy on Fire�. Our 3D space shooter with open gameplay and RPG-like equipment options for spaceships is still unchallenged in the AppStore. But despite heavily pepped up graphics and crisp sound, GoF on the iPhone cannot deny its Java origins and its five-year old design. Sci-fi action fans will be glad to hear that we have been working on converting Galaxy on Fire� 2 to the iPhone and other smartphones since October.

The sequel to the space epic has set standards in the Java field similar to Part 1 and, thanks to the even more open game design, offers significantly greater potential to be a megahit on the iPhone. So you can look forward to seeing Keith and other acquaintances from the first part once again later this year and play the Alien part for the first time in the Mission Pack in summer. And to keep the wait from being all too boring, we will keep you up-to-date with the status of the development with a regular developer�s diary.
