Ericsson and Tsinghua University in Beijing have teamed up to groom the future leaders of Chinas telecommunications industry.
Ericsson and Tsinghua University have joined forces to establish a "Future Communication" Interest Group. The group aims to cultivate innovative thinking for the future of China's telecommunications industry by providing the students of Tsinghua University, who are interested in future communications technologies, with a platform for learning, exchange and practice.
This is the first time Tsinghua University has established an Interest Group together with a company. With resource investments made by both parties, the Tsinghua-Ericsson "Future Communication" Interest Group will help students understand the latest developments and trends in the communications field, give them the chance to carry out technological R&D and to gain experience in a real enterprise environment, and encourage them to innovate and set up businesses on their own.
This is also one of the measures taken by Ericsson to honor its long-term commitment to cultivating highly competent professionals for China's ICT industry. In 2009, Ericsson China provided university students with more than 1200 internships and more than 1400 job opportunities; over one third of the latter were given to fresh graduates.
The Tsinghua-Ericsson "Future Communication" Interest Group will support its members through a three-step process: initial idea, run-up and take-off. During the first semester, Tsinghua University and Ericsson will dispatch industry experts and senior engineers to run seminars and professional courses on communication technologies; during the summer holiday, team members will get the opportunity to practice and study at Ericsson's R&D center in Beijing. This internship may be included in the Tsinghua student practice credit. During the second semester, team members will be divided into different groups depending on their interests to embark on their own R&D projects. Upon completion of one school year of training, the interest groups will report the results of their research project, provide subsequent research planning, state their resource requirements, and apply for the Tsinghua University Cumulative Support Fund to get financial support for their work.
The establishment of the Tsinghua & Ericsson "Future Communication" Interest Group follows Ericsson's launch of the first EriClub at Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications in September 2009. This year, Ericsson plans to expand "EriClub", introducing it at another five top universities in China, including Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Huazhong University of Science & Technology, Southeast University, South China University of Technology and Chengdu University of Electronic Science & Technology.
Mats H Olsson, President of Ericsson China and North East Asia, says, "Ericsson is honored to be able to cooperate with Tsinghua University to launch such meaningful student training programs. The Chinese students are very smart and passionate. I hope that through this program and the EriClubs established in universities across China, Ericsson can assist these aspiring young students by wakening their innovative spirit, cultivating their innovation capabilities so that they will one day grow into outstanding successors to Chinas communication industry."
Shi Zongkai, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Tsinghua University, says, "Ericsson is a well-respected world-class enterprise. We hope that the establishment of the Tsinghua-Ericsson 'Future Communication' Interest Group will bring in Ericssons outstanding R&D resources and engineers to support the students and develop their competence in all areas, especially in terms of creativity. We are particularly touched by the passion and sincerity that all Ericsson representatives have shown during the whole process, and would like to express our cordial thanks to them."
"EriClub", managed by students themselves, is an association of university students launched by Ericsson and the Chinese universities. Ericsson hopes to connect more students who share a passion for ICT and to leverage this "bridge" between the company and the students to engage as many young talents as possible by enabling them to put their innovative ideas into practice and unleash their potential. Moreover, in 2010, Ericsson will hold a series of events including the 3rd "Ericsson Cup" Campus Cooling Innovation Design Competition, Ericsson Sweden Day and Ericsson Multimedia Innovation Competition to provide the Chinese university students with the platform and opportunity for broadening their horizons and putting innovation into practice.
