Poor Timing Dooms Asus Eee Pads Before They Launch

Asus CEO Jerry Shen revealed an aggressive tablet strategy involving a variety of products aimed at different audiences and price points. The price of the Asus tablets, combined with coming late to the party, and poorly timed product releases virtually guarantee the Asus devices will stumble--if not fail completely.

Asus had previously announced plans to join the tablet fray--which tech company hasn't at this point? Now there are more details regarding the capabilities, pricing, and availability of the various Asus tablets--launching right after the holidays, or coinciding with the anticipated release of the next version of the Apple iPad.

While all of the tablet PC and e-reader wannabes work vigorously at the engineering drawing board trying to build a better mousetrap, Apple continues to sell millions of iPads, and Amazon continues to dominate e-readers with the Kindle. New players in these markets need to compete with these leading devices by delivering unique capabilities or cheaper prices or both--and to some extent timing is everything.

Asus plans to launch an e-reader competitor dubbed the Eee Tablet in October. Asus may rename it the Eee Note so that it isn't confused with other tablet PCs. It has a grayscale display--not digital ink, just shades of gray, runs on a custom Linux build, and it will sell for $300. This is in a market where the next-generation Kindle is available for only $139, and the competing Nook is $149. Good luck selling a $300 device against a $139 Kindle.

The Windows-based tablets from Asus at least seem to bring something new to the table. Asus is planning two versions--one based on Windows 7 Home Premium for about $1000 (includes a dock to become a sort of netbook hybrid), and one based on Windows CE 7 for between $400 and $500.

With a 12-inch display, Intel Core Duo processor and full Windows 7 OS, the Eee Pad EP121 will be more cumbersome than competing tablets, and it will have cooling and battery life issues. But, the biggest obstacle to the success of the Asus tablet will be the fact that it is scheduled to launch in the first quarter of 2011--right after most of the world has already just purchased new netbooks, notebooks, tablets, and e-readers for the holiday season.

Then, there is the most iPad-equivalent product from Asus--an Android-based tablet--set to launch in March of next year for about $400. While $400 is less than the current bottom end of the iPad lineup, and a capable Android tablet could help fill a void that the Dell Streak should have filled, the timing couldn't be worse.

The JooJoo--the resurrected CrunchPad--tried to launch at roughly the same time as the Apple iPad. It wasn't pretty. According to court documents uncovered by Gizmodo from the TechCrunch lawsuit against JooJoo, the device had only 90 pre-orders and 15 of those cancelled.

There are already rumors circulating about the next-generation iPad and Apple likes annual release cycles. That means that just as Asus tries to make a splash with its Android tablet, Apple will be the center of attention as the world waits for a new iPad--perhaps with a camera or two, and a faster processor, and an HD display. Apple could cut the pricing model of the iPad as well--taking the wind out of the sails of competing tablets that hoped to undercut the iPad.

To sum up: Asus is coming to the e-reader party at least a year too late with a device priced more than twice what it needs to be to compete in the market, followed by Windows-based tablets immediately following the holidays after most people have already acquired new technology and don't have any money left, and wrapping up by launching an Android-based tablet head-to-head against the next-generation iPad.

Good luck with that.

Asus Plans Eee Pad Android Tablet for March

Asustek Computer will launch the Eee Pad EP101TC as its first Android tablet in March to compete with the low-end Apple iPad. Asus will also launch two Windows-based tablets.

Oracle's patent infringement suit versus Google over Android aside, product development on Android continues unabated.

Asustek Computer, whose Windows XP-based Eee PC netbooks are popular in the United States and abroad, will launch its first Android tablet in March, Asus CEO Jerry Shen said.

PCWorld said Asus' first Android tablet will feature the Eee Pad brand and will cost less than $399, comparing favorably to Apple's trail-blazing iPad, which starts at $499. This low-end, 10-inch device is being branded the Eee Pad EP101TC.

Asus will launch a 12-inch, high-end tablet based on Windows 7 Home Premium Operating System for $1,000 in December or January, Shen said.

This machine, tagged the Eee Pad EP121, is priced so much higher than the Android tablet partly because it will sport a docking station that lets users transform it into a laptop computer.

The company will launch another Windows-based Eee Pad sans docking station in January. This 10-inch device, running Windows Embedded Compact 7, will sit between the Android-based EP101TC and the Eee Pad EP121 and cost $399 to $499.

But it's clear Asus is betting big on Android from the development manpower it's throwing at the platform.

Shen told reporters after the company's earnings call Aug. 13 that Asus has more than 800 software engineers working on Android, most of whom are working for the company's smartphone division.

Some of those engineers will be transferred to the tablet product division in an effort to focus on challenging the iPad and other Android tablets entering the market.

While Apple is selling million of iPads, Android tablets are pouring into the market much the way Android-based smartphones proliferated.

Motorola is building a tablet with a 10-inch screen powered by a 1GHz or 1.3GHz processor. The tablet, according to Boy Genius Report, will boast a front-facing camera for video chat and Android 3.0 when it appears in 2011.

It is not clear if this is the same Motorola-Verizon TV tablet the Financial Times reported. Lenovo, Samsung, Hewlett-Packard and others are all building tablets based on Android.

Some 70 Android-based phones have flooded the market since late 2008, and it's no stretch to think the same success won't be duplicated for tablets.

That is, of course, unless Oracle succeeds in halting use of the Android OS due to concerns that it infringes on Java patents it gained when it bought Sun Microsystems this year.

Asus Readies Android-based Eee Pad for March Launch

Asustek Computer plans to launch its first tablet device with Google's Android mobile operating system in March, the company's CEO said Friday.

The Android tablet will be the third in the Eee Pad family and will cost less than US$399, said Jerry Shen, CEO of Asustek, speaking to reporters after the company's second quarter earnings conference.

Apple's iPad, by comparison, costs $499 for the version with the least amount of storage. Companies have been scrambling to put out rivals to the iPad after seeing its popularity rocket since its launch.

Asustek currently has a team of over 800 software engineers working on Android but mostly for their smartphone division. Some of those engineers will be transferred to the tablet product division, Shen said.

He declined to comment further on the device.

Asustek will launch its first tablet device in December or January, a 12-inch touchscreen tablet that will cost around US$1,000, Shen said.

What makes the device more expensive than, say, the iPad, is that it comes with a docking station that transforms it into a laptop computer.

"If you want to compete with the iPad, you have to do more than just be less expensive," Shen said. "You have to offer more features. We want to spend more time perfecting the [Eee Pad] before we launch. We're looking more at Q1 to launch the devices."

The device, officially called the Eee Pad EP121, has Microsoft's Windows 7 Home Premium operating system and an Intel Core 2 Duo processor inside.

Asustek also plans to launch a second Eee Pad in January, a tablet with a 10-inch touchscreen that does not include a docking station. It uses processing cores from Arm inside and runs Microsoft's Windows Embedded Compact 7 software. It will cost between US$399 and US$499.

The 12-inch and 10-inch touchscreen Eee Pads were first displayed by Asustek at Computex in June.

Eee Tablet Becomes Eee Note, Gets Priced And Dated Along With Eee Pad

Not one to be left out of a market, Asus has been working on its latest entry to the tablet market for some time now, teasing both the Eee Tablet and Eee Pad over the last few months but never really setting a date or price. No longer!

The Eee Pad will cost $400 and run Android, but thats about as much information as we get except that its launching in March. March? Are you kidding me? There will be a new iPad out by then!

The Eee Tablet may be renamed the Eee Note, so that people dont confuse it with tablet PCs. Okay, then why would you call it the Eee Tablet in the first place? And if youre worried about customers being confused, why did you make your actual tablet look like an iPad, and then call it an EeePad? Answers are not forthcoming, friends. Anyway, the Eee Tablet will be sold in October for $300, and although I thought it looked cool in its demo, the fact is its just a monochrome LCD tablet running a special version of Linux. The truth is it combines the worst of both worlds. By the time it comes out we may be hearing about color e-ink devices, too.

More interesting is the 12-inch tablet announced by Asus, which will cost $1000 and dock with a station to become a regular laptop not unlike the U1 from Lenovo. And then there will be the other other tablet, which will be ARM-powered, run Windows Embedded Compact 7 Itty-Bitty Eensy-Weensy Edition, and will sell for between $400 and $500.

Really hedging their bets, arent they?

Windows Phone 7: Microsoft confirms launch partners

Dell, Asus, Samsung, LG, and HTC all coming to the party.

Microsoft has confirmed the hardware partners that will be launching Windows Phone 7 handsets, at a one-to-one briefing with Pocket-lint.

Although the company still wouldn't be drawn on any specific dates for the launch of the new mobile phone operating system, beyond some time in the "Holidays", it was happy to tell us who was making the devices for day one sales.

Greg Sullivan, senior product manager for Microsoft, told Pocket-lint that we could expect handsets from Dell, Asus, LG, HTC, and Samsung at the launch later this year.

It confirms certain former rumours.

We always thought Dell would be launching a Windows Phone 7 device, the Dell Lightning. And HTC exclusively confirmed to us that it was also launching a Windows Phone 7-powered handset too.

In our meeting, Sullivan referenced an LG Pacific, possibly a renaming of the LG Panther doing the rounds, but refused to be drawn further.

Microsoft is using a Samsung device for developers to preview and work with the new OS, but has categorically stated that Samsung isn't releasing the handset (pictured) in that form.

That's five launch handsets, some of which, Microsoft has already confirmed, will include a QWERTY keyboard, as well as a full touch screen experience.

Sullivan also confirmed to Pocket-lint that the operating system would not be exclusive to any one operator in the UK or the US.

"We want as many people as possible to be able to get it", Sullivan told Pocket-lint.

It's a strategy that Microsoft believes will bring it success. Sullivan told us that Microsoft believes it can quickly leapfrog operating systems like Palm's webOS, Nokia's MeeGo and Symbian platforms, Qualcomm's Brew MP, and Samsung's Bada, to become one of the top four operating systems on the market. It hopes to be pitched in with Google (Android), Apple (iPhone), and RIM (BlackBerry).

"We will offer the best aspects of Android and the best of the iPhone, giving users the flexibility of different form factors, but with the rigidity of apps that are guaranteed to work on every device that is out there", Sullivan told us.

However, when we asked whether or not he was hoping to steal users away from Apple's iPhone, or HTC's Android offering, we got a very different answer:

"By the time we will launch, we won't have to worry about stealing customers from other operating systems, there will a new wave of smartphone users to embrace for us to still be successful".

Brave words indeed.

ASUS EP101TC (Now) Shipping with Android in Q1 2011

Today the Netbook News team went down to the ASUS headquarters to hang out with the Eee Pad team, and we learned something that actually made us breath a sigh of relief. The EP101TC pad will dropping Windows CE and will be shipped with Android. Rather than running an outdated Windows CE, ASUS and the majority of tablet manufacturers will be relying on Googles Operating System. There is no further insight in Android 3.0 or Gingerbread but we have to admit we are pretty curious to find out what happens in the Fall. ASUS is planning on waiting for the 3.0 dust to settle and launch in Q1 of 2011 with products on display at CES. If you just cant wait until January, you might be able to grab a sneak peak with some telcos as they will be delivering the good first to them in December.

ASUS Eee Pad EP101TC to get Android instead of Windows Embedded

ASUS has apparently decided to ditch Windows 7 Embedded on their Eee Pad EP101TC and replace it with Android. The 12.2mm thick touchscreen slate was launched at Computex earlier this year, with a 10-inch display and 675g chassis; according to NetbookNews, ASUS original plan to use Microsofts cut-down embedded version of Windows 7 has been dumped in favor of Googles open-source OS.

The actual version of the Android OS used is unclear. ASUS are said to be waiting for Android 3.0 Gingerbread to arrive before announcing their next crop of devices at CES 2011 in January next year, and NetbookNews.de claim the company is using 2.2 Froyo for their prototype but will likely ship with 3.0. 3G versions are also tipped.

Garminphone Sales Sluggish at T-Mobile - Analyst

Garmin's latest navigation based mobile phone is reported to be seeing sluggish sales, with an estimated 20,000 units sold since the handset went on sale in the USA just under a month ago. Morgan Keegan analyst Yair Reiner said in a research note that the figures are based on visits to around 50 T-Mobile stores. The phone is currently only available from T-Mobile and Radio Shack.

Reiner said despite the low sales, he found that most T-Mobile sales staff he spoke with liked the PND enabled smartphone.

"Before the product launched, many sales associates spoke with enthusiasm about the device, stating it had by far the best navigation functionality of any mobile phone. However, even several days after release, many stores had not yet put the handset out on display, which was probably not very beneficial for sales. Others had not sold any despite displays being setup and several sold a few (less than 5). As of the beginning of this week stores have yet to show any meaningful sales numbers with maybe 5 sold on average per store since launch."

Reiner said he was lowering his expectations for Garmin's annual sales to reflect the slow sales of the Garminfone. He did however raise his prediction for profits based on stronger sales of vehicle-based systems and outdoor/fitness products.
