Smartphone vendor HTC on July 26, 2010 announced the adoption of Sony-developed Super LCD (SLCD) panels for 3.7-inch screens on its smartphones beginning at the end of the third quarter. With supply of AMOLED panels from Samsung Mobile Display (SMD) running short of demand, the Taiwan-based company is looking to diversify its panel sources. HTC is reportedly also considering IPX panels from LG Display (LGD).
SLCD panels will initially be adopted in models including the Desire and Nexus One. HTC CEO Peter Chou pointed out that SLCD is the latest in display technology with advantages in color balance, clarity and power conservation.
Industry pundits believe diversification of panel sources is the correct move by HTC. With the low yield of AMOLED panels, shortage will likely persist and SMD will continue to supply its affiliate Samsung Electronics as top priority.
HTC has not completely given up on AMOLED, said industry sources, noting that depending on supplies in 2011, the smartphone vendor could return to AMOLED panels. SMD and LGD as well as Taiwanese panel makers have plans to substantially ramp up capacity next year.
