Commenting on Nokia's price-fixing lawsuit against LCD panel makers, sources with Taiwan's panel sector have noted that it is not be easy for suppliers to jointly control prices as there are so many competitors and different technologies in the small- to medium-size LCD market.
Nokia has filed a lawsuit against Samsung Electronics, LG Display, Sharp, AU Optronics (AUO), Chunghwa Picture Tubes (CPT) and others of alleged collusion to fix prices for handset-use LCD panels.
AUO on Wednesday (December 2) responded that the company had not been served with the formal legal document and would not make comments.
The sources said the small- to medium-size LCD panel sector, unlike its large-size counterpart, has a lot of players, making it difficult for price-fixing moves. Small- to medium-size specialists are competing with one another, and extra competition also comes from large-size suppliers who could switch their production to small- to medium-size panels when there is oversupply in the large-size market. On the contrary, it is rather impossible for small- to medium-size specialists to shift to large-size production, the sources said.
In addition, there are alternative types of handset panels to TFT-LCD such as CSTN and AMOLED, these makers indicated.
