High Tech Computer (HTC) and Orange will jointly launch the HTC Dream in France on March 5, making Orange the third service provider to market the Android-powered smartphone in Europe, after T-Mobile and Telefonica/O2, according to market sources.
Since Vodafone has also signed an agreement with HTC to launch HTC's second Android-powered handset, the HTC Magic, in Europe starting this spring, HTC's Android-enabled smartphones have found their ways into four leading service providers in Europe.
Unlike T-Mobile, Telefonica/O2 and Vodafone, Orange is not a member of the Open Handset Alliance (OHA). Orange's adoption of the HTC Dream indicates the growing popularity of the Android-powered handsets, noted the sources.
In other news, HTC is expected to unveil a new BlackBerry-like smartphone, the Maple (codenamed 3G Excalibur) in the second quarter of this year. The Maple will come with a QWERTY keyboard and run on Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard OS (operating system), the sources revealed.
