Runway Beauty Recap

Now that the madness of Fashion Week is long gone, let's take at all the looks we covered for the upcoming Fall season. Which one was your favorite?A bronze and aqua eye takes center stage at United Bamboo.Messy, "leftover" hair and makeup at Alexander Wang.At Twinkle, makeup iss minimal, fresh and clean, but hair is crazy!I'm underwhelmed by Mally Roncal's "stormy eye" at Tracy Reese.Gold,

Runway Beauty: Get the Look at Jenni Kayne

Jenni Kayne is one of my favorites every season - she's young and fun, and the clothes are wearable and on the verge of affordable (they run just a little higher than DVF and sometimes you can get them on sale at Shopbop! Save your pennies, girls).Unfortunately I missed Jenni's presentation this year, but this video from Beauty.com walks you through the makeup (Vincent Longo) and skincare (Arcona

Runway Beauty: Backstage at 3.1 Phillip Lim

3.1 Phillip Lim was my last show of the week, and what better way to finish things up than with NARS? Makeup artist Ayako created the look for the show. It was all about the "new modern," a powerful woman, but to me it looked very much inspired by the 30s/40s era. Skin was nearly bare - and eyes and cheeks, completely so. Not even a swipe of mascara or a speck of blush! The face was accented only

Runway Beauty: Marchesa

Marchesa's fall collection was inspired by the iconography of the 16th century and the excesses of the Golden Age, drawing elements from Spanish style and the Elizabethan renaissance. To complement the look, makeup artist Talia Shobrook used Stila products to create a lush, rich face.Eyes were neutral and slightly smokey, with dramatic brows and lashes - including some long falsh lashes at the

Runway Beauty: J. Mendel

Edward Tricomi created this gorgeous 'do for last week's J. Mendel show, and it's simpler than it looks! The look was a classic chignon, turned youthful and modern with a unique oval-braided shape.I'm not so sure about that little mini ponytail on the top, but the braided chignon is so pretty - an unexpected twist on a classic look. It's sleek and modern but the braiding adds a romantic touch.I

Runway Beauty: Backstage at Narciso Rodriguez

Before we start talking beauty, can I just say that Jerry Seinfeld is actually really hot in person? Saw him at the show and was shocked. Off to watch some Seinfeld reruns as soon as I post this. Now, down to business. The look at Narciso Rodriguez, created by Shiseido's Dick Page, was "natural and ephemeral," with lots of pale pinks and pearly finishes. Page used two shades of pink on eyes -

Runway Beauty: Backstage at Thakoon

Thakoon was the last show that Gucci Westman and Lancome were doing together, so it was kind of a bittersweet moment...the end of an era. Gucci created an eye that was "a little bit theatrical," with shades of mauve, grey, white and lilac. The whole look was rather icy, "very cold, and sort of powdery," said Gucci.Cheeks were bright lilac-pink and the colors seemed to sweep up into the eye area,

Runway Beauty: Fashion Week Math at Herve Leger

What do you get when you mix a little bit of Proenza Schouler and a little bit of Thakoon? The hair and makeup at Herve Leger, that's what.Others have been talking about how "unexpected" this look was, but it looks pretty derivative to me. We saw the feather headpieces at Thakoon last year, and that lip color is a dead ringer for Proenza Pink.I'm over it. What do you think?

Runway Beauty: Backstage at Tuleh

Bryan Bradley showed MAC artist Polly Osmond a photo of Charlotte Rampling as inspiration for the Tuleh Fall/Winter '08 show. To go along with the collection, which was "rich in texture and color," Osmond created a shimmering chocolate and gold eye using MAC Pigments (a product I have only recently learned how to use...finally).Osmond used metallic Pigments in shades of light gold, rose gold,

Runway Beauty: Backstage at Tracy Reese

Tracy Reese's Fall/Winter collection was inspired by nature, so makeup artist Mally Roncal took that into account when creating the look for the show. She gave the models a "stormy eye" - NOT a typical smokey eye, she said. Just as a storm comes in waves, this eye look was created with layers and layers of color, from lilac to grey to black. "The eye area has a lot of power," she said. "It's very

Runway Beauty: Backstage at Twinkle

Twinkle, twinkle, little...curling iron?Yes, my friends, a little curling iron indeed. To create this fluffy, wavy look, the Redken team started by curling hair with a very narrow-barreled curling iron (I'm guessing 1/4", certainly no more than 1/2"). I had actually never seen one with such a narrow barrel! Then the hair was teased, starting at the crown, creating these big fluffy waves. This may

Runway Beauty: Backstage at Alexander Wang

Alexander Wang was back this season with more clothes for the "M.O.D." (Model Off Duty) and the hair and the makeup were a perfect match. I asked Dick Page how the Alexander Wang girl had evolved since last season. "She's wearing more clothes," he said, "and she's really pissed off!"Indeed, the look was very downtown, slightly grungy, and definitely angry. Dick described the makeup inspiration

Runway Beauty: Backstage at United Bamboo with Dick Page and Shiseido

I was so excited to kick off my Fashion Week coverage at United Bamboo, because Shiseido's Dick Page was the lead makeup artist at the show. This guy is a trip. Not only is he incredibly talented, he has a great sense of humor (and he always has 5 minutes to talk to a blogger about the look).United Bamboo's designers showed Dick a photo from Self Service magazine featuring an eye look that they

The Tents Are Back in Town

While it seems like last week that I was in the Tents covering the Spring '08 shows, Mercedes Benz Fashion Week has rolled around for another season. I can't believe this will be my fourth season covering the shows! The first time around, there were very few bloggers in the Tents so I felt compelled to write about every show and recap every look. This season I'm happy to say that there are a good

Tangerine Dreams

Now that all the shows are behind us, there's actually time to sit back and dissect the trends! One that popped up quite a bit on the New York Spring 2008 runways was, believe it or not, orange. Nanette Lepore (left), Carolina Herrera (center), and Temperley (right) all showed vibrant tangerine lips, and I was shocked to find myself liking the look! Here's the rundown for each:Nanette Lepore:

Runway Beauty: Backstage with Orlando Pita at Doo.Ri, Plus New Products from T3!

Not only was Dick Page's makeup at Doo.Ri completely gorgeous, Orlando Pita was back once again creating an amazing hairstyle!Orlando created a look that was half sleek updo and half messy bun. The top section of the hair was pulled back neatly, while the bottom was pinned messily. I loved it. This man does amazing hair. I barely had a chance to snap this pic of him with Chanel Iman because he

Runway Beauty: Thakoon

Get ready for the next lipstick in Lancome's Pout-a-Porter series! This pretty pink lip was custom-blended by Gucci Westman for Thakoon's Spring 2008 show and will be available in a few months, following in the footsteps of Behnaz, Proenza Pink, and P.S. Kiss.Mixed from shades of beige, fleshy pink, and blue fuschia, the Thakoon lip is a creamy stain with a satiny, translucent finish. Gucci calls

Runway Beauty: Backstage with Shiseido and Dick Page at United Bamboo

The Spring '08 United Bamboo show was held at one of my favorite venues, the Prince George Ballroom, with one of my favorite makeup artists, Dick Page, at the helm! The backstage area was tight, but Dick is so cool that the atmosphere stayed laid-back and fun. He created a fab '60s look inspired by Michelle Phillips. With an inspiration like Michelle, how could you not love it? I just wish I had a

Runway Beauty: Proenza Schouler

The past couple of seasons at Proenza Schouler, it's been all about the lip. Two seasons ago we saw the prototype of the ultra-hyped, super cool Proenza Pink, and last season brought an incredible glossy red lip custom-blended from four shades. So this season, I was expecting another MAJOR lip. But...gasp! A monochromatic face! But you know what? I really liked it. Neutral faces are sometimes hard

Runway Beauty: Carolina Herrera

Juicy lips, defined brows, and AMAZING sunglasses at Carolina Herrera.Diane Kendal for MAC created a look that's at once youthful and elegant. I love the sheer tangerine/berry lip; we're actually seeing a lot of "fruit" colors for next season...tangerines, melons, and candy apples in particular. Details on the lip from our friends at MAC:"To go with Carolina's fruity palette, the lips were
