CES2010: Dell shows off a tablet prototype and 11 inch gaming laptop

Dell showed off a tablet concept that it is working on for the future.

At a press conference, Dell executives gave reporters a peek at a 5-inch touch screen slate running on the Android operating system. Dell said there's no guarantee the device will come to market but Michael Tatelman, vice president of sales and marketing for Dell, said it makes sense in this age of mobile computing. He said Dell is also working on different screen sizes as well.

"We're packing in more and more capabilities into smaller and lighter form factors," said Tatelman. It's good for, "people to have access to their media and their memories and great experiences on the go."

Dell showed off a video of a Dell slate in action. Users were able to swipe and send pictures and images to an adjacent tablet. Or they could put them together and play video games across machines.

Dell also unveiled a new Alienware M11x laptop that offers an 11.6 inch screen with a price tag of less than $1,000. The company said it's a new category of full performance gaming laptop in a thin form factor with a cheap price.

The M11x comes with a GT335m graphics processor from Nvidia. The laptop is built to showcase the GPU, crafting the thermal design of the machine to support it.

When not in gaming mode, users can rely on a low power processor and embedded graphics chip to get 6.5 hours of use. And then when you need to play serious games, one button push switches the computer to the Nvidia GPU, which can provide 2 hours of continuous gaming use. The M11x ships this spring.
