Qualcomm-Verizon Brew cooperation may benefit Taiwan handset and module makers

Cooperation between Qualcomm and Verizon Wireless to promote the Open Brew platform and form a joint venture to promote M2M services may bring in more contract business for Taiwan-based handset and module makers, according to industry sources in Taiwan.

Under the cooperation pact, Verizon is expected to roll out a variety of devices, including feature handsets and smartphones, that will enable Brew applications, the sources noted.

HTC (High Tech Computer), which has been cooperating closely with both Qualcomm and Verizon for a long time, will certainly benefit from the Qualcomm-Verizon joint efforts, the sources contended. In addition, the planned joint venture between Qualcomm and Verizon to provide machine-to-machine (M2M) wireless communications and smart services offerings may create demand for wireless modules for M2M solutions, the sources added.

A number of Taiwan makers such as Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry), Foxlink and Inventec Appliances will be capable to supply M2M wireless modules for the emerging segment, said the sources.
