Handset chipmaker MediaTek is likely to source power amplifiers (PAs) from Silicon Storage Technology (SST), in addition to Skyworks, according to sources at IC distributors.
MediaTek's move to expand its PA suppliers is driven by a desire to grab more share in the white-box handset market and to avoid depending on a single supplier, the sources indicated.
SST will initially provide PAs for MediaTek's entry-level 2.5G handset chips, and it may work for the company's TD-SCDMA chips targeting China's 3G handset market in the future. SST also expects to enter the supply chains of MediaTek's partners with its NOR flash products, added the sources.
