Garmin-Asus smartphone hits Taiwan market amid growing global demand for GPS-enabled handsets

Asustek Computer and Garmin have launched their co-developed GPS-centric smartphone, the Nuvifone G60, in the Taiwan market, cashing in on the growing demand for GPS-enabled handsets in the global market.

Global shipments of GPS-enabled smartphones are expected to grow 34% on year to 77 million units in 2009, accounting for over 40% of the global shipments of 180-190 million smartphones projected for the year, according to data compiled by Strategy Analytics.

The launch of the dual-branded Garmin-Asus Linux-based G60 was originally set in the first half of 2009, but was pushed back to the third quarter.
