I had breakfast with my mom and dad at the Original Pancake House earlier this week. My parents arent big fans of sweets and pastries, but one thing they do love are pancakes! I swear, they could eat pancakes day and night and never ever tire of them. Our favorite breakfast place on the island is either Cinnamons in Kailua (for carrot cake pancakes) or Jacks in Aina Haina. But because of time constraints, we decided to visit OPH on Kapiolani.

The breakfast prices are noticeably higher compared to nearby restaurants, but the food here is consistently reliable, and service is good. Today, my dad decided to venture away from his typical omelette & eggs and order the blueberry pancakes. They come by plate of four, filled with plenty of blueberries, liberally sprinkled with powdered sugar and a mound of quickly melting whipped butter. My gold standard for pancakes still rest at Clinton St. Baking, but these will do just fine for Hawaii.

My mom had her usual order ham and eggs...

Which comes with a trio of buttermilk pancakes. Man, these are good! If you come here on a good day, the pancakes are a bit crispy on the edges, but still joyfully buttery and tender, with the blessed ability to soak up butter like a sponge. On these days all I need a good bit of butter and can simply pass on the maple syrup.

A while ago Shann mailed me a box of Swedish pancake mix and a jar of lingonberry jam from Ikea. I finished the entire jar of jam, but never made the pancakes yetso until I find myself more lingonberry jam, Im quite content with the Swedish pancakes from OPH! Its DIY style with three large, thin and crisp pancakes and a side of tart lingonberry jam and whipped butter.

I wished I had an extra plate to do the assembling of the pancakes, nonetheless, theres just something so satisfying about smearing butter over hot pancakes, and dabbles of lingonberry jam at 8:00am. I couldnt figure out if the proper way to eat it was roll it up like a summer roll, or to fold it into fourths. So I alternated and did both. It was the most interactive breakfast Ive had in a while!
