Smartphones represented a 30% share of Far EasTone Telecommunications' (FET's) handset sales in the first half of 2010 with a volume of 200,000 units, according to the Taiwan-based carrier. Smartphones from Apple, Nokia, Samsung Electronics and Acer were the top sellers for FET in the period.
With the rising popularity of smartphones, revenues from mobile value-added services also saw rapid growth to account for 16% of revenues in May and June, and up to 18-20% is expected for the second half, the company indicated. For its app store, FET pointed out that 600 applications are currently available and over 70% of app sales came from non-FET subscribers, which highlights the importance of non-subscribers as a revenue source in the future.
In regards to the iPhone 4's launch schedule in Taiwan, FET estimated after September at the earliest, adding most subsidized plans in the market should be similar to those offered for the iPhone 3GS.
