MediaTek expects its 2.5G/2.75G single-chip GSM/GPRS solution, the MT6253, to become the main item of its handset solution shipments in the third quarter as a number of clients have completed design-in process, according to the company.
Based on MediaTek's roadmap, the MT6253 should have replaced its predecessor, the 2.5G MT6225, in late 2009 or early in 2010. However, tight production at wafer foundry houses over the past months has delayed shipments of the MT6253 solutions.
MediaTek has now gained sufficient capacity from foundry houses and over 90% of its clients have completed design-in for the MT6253. This will enable the company to ramp up shipments of the MT6253 starting the third quarter, the company noted.
Other IC design houses with IC parts supporting the MT6253 solution, including power management (PWM) ICs from Anpec Electronics, NOR flash memory chips from Eon Silicon Solution, SRAM and SDRAM parts from Elite semiconductor Memory Technology (ESMT), and Bluetooth chips from IC Plus, are expected to receive more windfall orders starting the third quarter, according to industry watchers.
