New workspace provides mobile employees with latest technology, greater convenience and ability to minimize environmental impact.
AT&T* announced the grand opening of a new tPlace flexible workspace in Richardson, Texas that will allow AT&T employees who primarily work from home access to an office environment. The workspace allows team members to collaborate when needed and take advantage of the latest office technology and high-tech tools. The new tPlace location, located at 2270 Lakeside Blvd. in Richardson, is 4,000 square feet and gives mobile employees the flexibility to work when, where and how they can be most effective. The space features large open areas with specially crafted workstations that aim to optimize work efficiency for employees, enabling both individual and collaborative work.
This new workspace provides an opportunity for our telecommuting employees to come together at one central location, and it also supports a healthy work-life balance with a location closer to many of our employees homes, said Mark Schleyer, AT&T senior vice president, corporate real estate. The location is designed to support our employees needs and provide a convenient and comfortable work environment.
Upon arrival at tPlace, employees find a touch screen virtual concierge that allows them to easily reserve conference rooms and office space or ask for assistance. The space features four small group conference rooms with surface level connectivity for cell phone or computer chargers, wireless chargers for smartphone devices, multi-tap group technology and corporate Wi-Fi.
The city of Richardson is happy to be the location for this new type of workplace that helps facilitate a new way in which employees can collaborate and work together, said Mayor Gary Slagel, Richardson. The tPlace workspace recognizes how todays work environment is changing, and were happy to be a part of it.
Additionally, tPlace supports AT&Ts overall commitment to minimizing environmental impact in ways that are important to the community and relevant to the business. The Richardson location provides telecommuters who live in North Dallas with an AT&T office location that is closer to them than the global headquarters building in downtown Dallas. This enables them to save gas and reduce their carbon footprint. According to a telecommuting survey conducted in August 2009, the overall AT&T telecommuter population avoided 142 million commute miles per year, with annual fuel savings of approximately 7 million gallons and a net reduction of 61,637 metric tons of CO2-equivalents (CO2e) emissions per year. At the end of 2009, AT&T counted more than 10,000 approved telecommuters and looks to build on this number through 2010 and beyond.
Today, more than 725 of AT&Ts telecommuting employees living in the North Dallas area have access to this tPlace work location. The workspace is open seven days a week, 24 hours a day and is the first of its kind.
The facility also features Telepresence video-conferencing, which enables employees to have virtual in-person meetings with their colleagues around the globe. AT&T recently sponsored a study commissioned by the Carbon Disclosure Project entitled The Telepresence Revolution, that found that large U.S. and U.K. businesses that substitute some business travel with telepresence can cut CO2 emissions by nearly 5.5 million metric tons in total the greenhouse gas equivalent of removing more than one million passenger vehicles from the road for one year and achieve total economy-wide financial benefits of almost $19 billion, by 2020.
The office itself also offers environmentally friendly features, with large windows that provide ample natural light and floors are covered with recycled carpet. Planners also utilized renovated office furniture throughout the spacereducing material waste and cost.
The construction of this flexible workplace supports our goal of being responsible to both our employees and the environment, said Charlene Lake, AT&T senior vice president of public affairs and Chief Sustainability Officer. The workspace not only provides a more convenient work location for many of our mobile employees, but also helps minimize their environmental impact by limiting long distance drives to meet with co-workers.
