Frequently Asked Questions
Simon Walker, head of Developer World, answers some of your questions about certification and test criteria for Java applications:
Q: You just announced a major change to the content submission process yesterday in Brazil. Why did Sony Ericsson change its submission procedure now?
A: We felt it important to recognize and act upon upon the JavaME communitys desire for us to simplify and also reduce the cost of testing and signing. As a recognized leader in JavaME we have always had a open and active dialogue with developers. They explained the challenges they faced and we have quickly moved to help.
Q: How will the change benefit developers?
A: A key benefit comes in reducing the bottom line cost to the developer, by giving them the option to now submit content that is signed with a Thawte or Verisign certificate. This subtle change will significantly reduce the cost of testing and signingfor each and every developer out there coming to Sony Ericsson as a route to market.
Beyond that, we now also allow certain types of Java content to be distributed unsigned. Specifically, if the content does not use protected APIs, it does not have to be signed at all. For example, a game that uses the 3D API does not trigger any user prompts and can be distributed unsigned. (If content uses a protected API, it may be submitted unsigned and we will review it, but it must still be signed prior to distribution)
Q: How does the submission change fit into the overall SE strategy on applications?
A: The value and innovation that application developers bring to consumers is clear for Sony Ericsson. We have worked very hard, and will continue to work, on delivering a consistent platform for Java developers. We take it very seriously inside the company. That method of working gives an insight into our respect for developers and what they produce and deliver. If we couple our platform implementation and the simplification of our submissions process, this makes for a very attractive proposition to any Java developer around the World. Applications have been and will continue to be central to our strategy and drive our platform development.
