The interior was also bright. Very bright. And clown like. Very in your face. I had pretty high hopes after reading this review on the Hawaii Diner site, especially coupled with the fact that South Shore Grill is owned by Linda Gehring, a former private chef and wife of Ted (owner of local buger spot I rather enjoy: Teddy's Bigger Burgers. The menu is beyond simple, and there's no table service, just food handed over the counter, so I don't understand how hard it would be to deliver decent food.
All the sandwiches come on house-baked ciabatta bread. Too bad it was lousy ciabatta. It was heavy, doughy, and under baked. No flavor. The tuna salad was a soggy mess, I think someone forgot to drain the can. And can I mention the intense use of mayo all over the top half of the ciabatta? Like slobberying slathers into every oversized ciabatta pore. Half the tuna salad is already composed of mayo, need there be more?
It�s difficult to go wrong with a caprese sandwich if you use fresh ingredients. We already discussed the bread, so I figured that as long as the rest of the sandwich was good, all could be forgiven. But something was wrong! The mozzarella that was offered in generous portions was funky tasting: too old perhaps. The mac nut pesto was alrightly, but it sure didn�t save the sandwich. Teddy�s Bigger Burgers used to occupy this place. Maybe they need to come back.
