Here's a tip on where you should NOT have a macaron. Alice Walter's Cafe Fanny. Just next door to Berkeley's incredible, heaven sent Acme bread, you would really think that they could make a decent macaron.

I did not intend to stop in Cafe Fanny and was quite full after a breakfast of orange almond brioche, pumpkin roll and almond croissant at Acme's but just went in to see...and I saw! So many wonderful looking pastries and sweets. But none looked quite as attractive as the round sphere of chocolate macaron.

But be warned, looks are deceiving. It's TERRIBLE! Extremely sugary, chewy and sticky with the first bite, so wrong in every way. The filling reminded me of a gummy, thick and pasty take on Magnolia's awful chocolate frosting. I thought I was going to throw up. And that's all I have to say on Cafe Fanny. Totally turned off.
(Maybe I'll go back one day, it was busy and does have a good reputation among Berkeley locals...but sheesh, that was the worst thing I've eaten in a long time! Hopefully they just had an off day...we all have those once in a while...:))
