On a very exciting note, I leave to NYC in one hour. Just a short layover in DFW and then Blue Ribbon Bakery with Robyn! What does 10 days in the city entail? Lots and lots of good eating and meeting up with old and new friends...and many delicious posts to come!

But before that, I just wanted update on a late night snack stop in Alhambra. My aunt craving some light sweets the other night and I wanted some...er...savory deep fried food (ideally it would be Wu Gok, but I think that's a rare find at 11pm on a Thursday evening). We made a short drive to the Kang Kang Food Court which is actually a small full service/casual sit down/take out or whatever you want to make our of it place. The menu is conveniently divided into "Breakfast, Taiwanese Food, Food in Northern, Eastern and Southern China, Hong Kong & Asia, House Specialties, Tea Drinks, Taiwanese Ice Slush and Health Drink." Needless to say, there's something for everyone.

The curry pastry demanded that I eat it. I'm never one to turn down curried anything! It was alright, flaky (read: rich in LARD) pastry filled with curried ground beef and onions. It wasn't hot nor at room temperature but wavered somewhere between the lines of "I wanted to be hot, but didn't make it..."I was not expecting spectacular food judging from how much ground Kang Kang attempts to cover, but alas, my deep fried pastry craving was fulfilled.

My aunt ordered the Taiwanese Ice Slush. I don't know if this is "real" Taiwanese food, but it a variation on shave ice which I enjoy! You just pick 4 items from the dozen or so choices.

We went with the taro, green beans, mango pudding and red beans. We are bean lovers. A generous scoop of each "item" went into a shallow bowl, was topped with a mountain of shaved ice and a healthy drizzled of sweetened condensed milk. All for only $2.50! As odd as it sounds, it was a combination choice I would quickly make again. The taro chunks were cut in strangely big pieces, but paired well with the soft, sweet beans. Alternating spoonfuls of mango pudding squares and milk laced ice was utterly refreshing. My aunt got tired of it halfway through, so I, being the culinary trashcan, gladly polished off the rest.

Here's a quick shot of some of the quick foods offered for take out. It's similar to what you find in Chinese fast food restaurants. If you decide to dine in, you're options cover the range from Xiao Long Baos to a sour vegetable and lamb hotpot. Being one of the few restaurants in Alhambra open late, Yang Yang with its bright yellow florescent lighting and wooden tables and chairs was packed with diners eager for a low key, well-priced midnight snacks.
