Sony Ericsson Zylo review: Walkman rewind

Gsmarena have posted their review of the Sony Ericsson Zylo. Here are the phone's key features, main disadvantages and their final impression.

Key features:
* Large 2.6" 16M-color TFT screen, 240 x 320 pixels, scratch-resistant surface
* Quad-band GSM support
* Dual-band 3G with 7.2Mbps HSDPA, 2Mbps HSUPA
* 3 megapixel fixed-focus camera; VGA@24fps video recording
* FM radio with RDS
* Stereo Bluetooth 2.1
* microSD card slot, 260 MB internal memory
* Environment-friendly package
* Social networking integration, widget-enhanced interface
* NetFront v3.5 web browser with full Flash support
* Very good audio output quality
* Accelerometer sensor for UI auto-rotate
* Smart dialing

Main disadvantages:
* No 3.5mm audio jack
* No standard USB port
* No bundled data cable or memory card
* No camera lens cover
* No document viewer

Traditional sliders are a dying breed so having one of them for a few days made for a refreshing change. And a Walkman at that someone at Sony Ericsson must have been feeling nostalgic.

Well, lets face it, the Sony Ericsson Zylo cant do all that much. But if this phone is to sell which we think it will it wont be for the tech inside. The Zylo looks nice, feels great in the hand and has decent equipment for a mobile phone that costs about a hundred euro.

Its difficult to pin down the defining feature of the Zylo. It has a 3-megapixel camera capable of VGA video recording, a nice music player, as well as solid social networking integration and fast data. There are plenty of apps and games and you also get a large 2.6 display for good measure.

It is still far away from being perfect, though. But while we think theres no need to fuss over imaging or connectivity in an entry level package, theres one thing and not a big thing either that couldve made a lot of sense. 3.5 mm audio jacks are hard to find in Walkman phones to begin with but how hard could this be? If the Spiro can have it why cant the Zylo?

What makes it even stranger is that the Spiro is obviously the lesser and cheaper package of the two. But lets take a look at some more devices that are more or less similar to the Sony Ericsson Zylo.

Quite fortunately perhaps, two of Zylos very viable alternatives are signed by Sony Ericsson. The Sony Ericsson Yari and the more recent Hazel have been around for a while and cost less than they did at launch. For around 160 euro (50 euro more than the Zylos current street price) you get a large 16M-color screen (measuring 2.4 or 2.6 inches) and 5MP autofocus imaging. And the Hazel even tops that with Wi-Fi, GPS, active noise cancellation and a splash-resistant design.

The S60-based Nokia 6700 slide is in the vicinity of 160 euro as well. Like the other two, it features a 5-megapixel sharpshooter (an excellent one, too), but on top of that its clad in aluminum and comes in numerous colors. Bear in mind though that its display is notably smaller (2.2 inches) and there is no Wi-Fi support (unlike the Hazel).

However the Nokia X3 is the most likely Zylo rival. The X3 is a feature phone that costs around 100 euro, has dedicated music controls and a 3MP fixed-focus camera. Sound familiar? It should. The only thing is, the X3 screen is smaller and theres no 3G connectivity. But the 3.5mm audio jack is there.

Maybe none of the Sony Ericsson Zylo disadvantages is a true deal breaker and the reasonable price tag is a welcome sign for many young users. There seems to be plenty of choice in the low end but character and personality are scarce. The Walkman branding is in a way an invitation to a fresh set of customers to start a new love affair with Sony Ericsson.

Sony Ericsson Zylo Review

PhoneArena reviews the Sony Ericsson Zylo. Sony's Walkman brand has given a lot to mankind, from the first mobile cassette player to the Sony Ericsson Zylo, which we are about to review. We have always liked the idea of having Walkman-branded devices (yes, we are old school), but how ...

Taiwan market: Sony Ericsson launches Zylo phone

Sony Ericsson has launched its latest feature phone, the Zylo, in the Taiwan market in cooperation with Far EasTone Telecommunications (FET), which will promote the handset in a preferential package targeting the younger generation.

According to FET, the feature phone segment remains important in Taiwan, with over 70% of handset users still using feature phones. With the growing prominence of tablets and other portable Internet devices, FET believes there will be a market for simpler handsets, especially in the youth segment where the high price tags of smartphones remain a barrier.

Users under 25 account for 20% of FET's subscribers. FET also represents a 27% share of the under-25 market in Taiwan, the carrier indicated.

HTC, Nokia, BlackBerry and Sony Ericsson releases rumoured in mobile leak bonanza

The clever folks aboard the good ship Omio have posted what they claim is a manufacturer roadmap for a huge number of UK mobile phones. They've listed more devices than it's possible to shake a stick at, so we recommend you check out the article in its entirety, but we've selected a few of the more interesting devices for you here.

Take all of this with a healthy fistful of salt, as Omio hasn't revealed its source, and we have no way of knowing whether or not any of the dates or details posted here are true. (Incidentally, if you found this article by Googling 'healthy fistful of salt', salt really isn't that healthy, you should cut back, okay?)

Sony Ericsson W20

The wandering Walkman returns! One of Sony's most famous brands is back, and will allegedly be bounding into the mobile market this July. It looks pretty neat, but if that funny lookin' socket in the right-hand picture turns out to be a proprietary headphone port, we'll eat our own hands in a fit of rage.

BlackBerry Curve 9300

Supposedly hitting the UK in August, the Curve 9300 (nicknamed the Kelper, weirdly) should fit neatly between the Curve 8520 and Bold 9700, so somewhere in the mid-range in terms of price. Omio reports there's a 3.2-megapixel camera on board and that full Qwerty keyboard certainly screams 'BlackBerry' to us.

Nokia X2

A new addition to the X series, we've spotted this sleek candybar phone before. Omio predicts a September release for this particular bundle of joy, and it will supposedly feature a 5-megapixel camera and a choice of silver and blue (pictured) or red and black colours. We desperately want a really decent Nokia phone this year, so fingers crossed this one's a winner.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 Shakira

Another September release, this phone will apparently sit somewhere between the more powerful, high-end Android-running Xperia X10 and the more diminutive X10 Mini and Mini Pro. The X8 (which we will forever call the Shakira, regardless of the veracity of these leaks) is another handset we've come across before -- read our in-depth analysis by clicking this link. We really don't think Android 1.6 cuts the mustard these days, but we'll have to see in October, when this phone is rumoured to go on sale.

HTC Gold

Now we're talking. Everyone's favourite Taiwanese smart-phone titan is rumoured to be taking its first crack at the new Windows Phone 7 operating system with this device. That image isn't much to go on, but it certainly looks like this handset would suit the stripped-down interface we're expecting from Microsoft's new platform. Omio reckons November is the month we'll see this mythical mobile.

As soon as we can confirm or deny these release details and device information, we'll pass the knowledge along.

Massive 2010 Manufacturer UK Roadmap Revealed: HTC Gold, Nokia E7, Samsung Cetus Due Q4?

Weve just been tipped off to a huge UK mobile phone release schedule for the rest of the year, with plenty of third quarter cuties and the hottest winter warmers present and correct!

All the major manufacturers are here, with some of their biggest phones to come out in a long time. Join us as we run through some highlights and give you an exclusive glimpse at whats in store for 2010!

Obviously these dates may be subject to change, but judging by some of the models on here as well as the source we have little reason to doubt the veracity

July

The summer kicks into high gear as a host of phones are revealed from a gaggle of manufacturers, from smartphones to touch-happy fashion devices.

Nokia E5-00 - Nokias latest messaging device is due this month, taking the best of classics like the E71 and E72 and giving it a current-gen sheen.

Sony Ericsson W20 - The W20 marks the return of the Sonys treasured Walkman brand into the mobile arena in July, as this tiny handset merges connectivity and musicin a pink hue no less! Bound to sell shed loads.

Samsung i5500 The Corby/Genio enters smartphone territory for the first time, with this Android-toting handset due to make a July debut. Sporting the latest build of Googles OS, Wi-Fi, A-GPS and a 2-megapixel camera, business devices on a budget become reality.

August

As the leaves change, so do the offerings from BlackBerry, LG and HTC, all revamping their ranges with some tasty new devices.

Nokia X6 8GB The music-savvy mobile takes another memory cut to reach an affordable price tag at the beginning of August, with an 8GB model of this next-gen XpressMusic device set to launch.

BlackBerry Curve 9300 - Despite the Curve 8520 and Bold 9700 cleaning up in the budget and high end of the mobile market respectively, the Curve 9300 (codenamed Kepler) is apparently earmarked for a UK release in early August, slotting nicely between the two.

With a 3.2 megapixel keyboard and a full QWERTY keyboard, its certainly a BlackBerry alright

September

Everyones going colours crazy in September with a pink Vivaz variant and a white model of the Samsung i5500 on the way, but there will also be some new handsets to back it up!

Nokia X2 This latest addition to the Xseries lineup sees a slender candybar handset in the X2, complete with dedicated music player buttons emblazoned down the sides.

Due to arrive in UK stores this September 1st with 16GB of storage support and a 5-megapixel camera, this could be the shot in the arm that the Finnish manufacturer needs in the mass market.

Sony Ericsson Hazel The eco-friendly mobile must have been taking its own advice and walking to market, as it has taken absolutely ages to arrive since its December 09 unveiling Nevertheless, the Hazel still looks great and keeps us interested with a sleek slider design and unique noise cancelling technology.

October

An explosion of eagerly anticipated handsets drop at the start of Q4, with Nokia, Sony Ericsson and HTC firing on all cylinders. Strap in, its gonna be a bumpy mobile ride!

HTC Vision, HTC Ace Whilst the HTC Vision is the much papped Desire-plus-QWERTY offering that has been doing the rounds, the Ace we know nothing about.

Both due for an October release, any chance that the latter could be one of those physical keyboard rocking handsets leaked earlier in the year? Fingers crossed!

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X8 (Shakira) A September release for another sandwich handset, nestling between the Android-powered XPERIA X10 and the mini / mini pro variants by inheriting the style of the former and the user interface of the latter.

With a 3-megapixel camera lens and 3.5mm audio jack, the X8 integrates social networking with TimeScape and inherits the creamy goodness of Android.

Nokia N8 - You know about this one

Nokias flagship phone for this year, the Symbian-toting handset might have divided critical opinion in terms of platform choice, but all were agreed in finding the N8 one of the best to come from the Finnish phone maker when it came to build quality.

Eschewing plastic and corner-cutting for an assured metal frame, the N8 looks the part but will Symbian^3 be enough in a post-Android smartphone world? Well find out this October.

Sony Ericsson Yendo Full-touch Walkman fanciness from Sony Ericsson, as the Yendo brings the four-corner quick access from the XPERIA X10 mini but leaving Googles platform behind on the way.

November

It may be the far flung future but there are still hot phones to excite this winter with HTCs Windows Phone 7 debut and Sonys XPERIA-aping Walkman wonder making an appearance

HTC Gold Rumoured to be the Taiwanese manufacturers first bite at the Windows Phone 7 cherry (Ace permitting), we all want to see what they can do with Microsofts shiny new phone platform.

They made Android sing (to the tune of a 58% increase in Q2 revenue, no less), they made Windows Mobile bearablethis one should be big.

Nokia E7 A serious bid for messaging supremacy from Nokia here, as the E7 is rumoured to take an aluminium leaf out of the N8's book when it comes to form factor whilst being powered by the new Symbian^3 operating system and packing an AMOLED display!

Rumoured to have a full-QWERTY keyboard and tilting touchscreen, could this be the ill-fated Nokia N97, done right? Lets hope so.

Samsung i8700 Cetus - Question marks go herewe know nothing of this phone on the wires, but it is sure to be a huge one, judging by the choice of such a busy release window

Cetus was the name of a sea monster in Greek mythology, although it is often called the whale today, but is also a constellation of stars in the region of the sky known as the Water (cheers, Wikipedia!).

With bada meaning wave, does all this aquatic imagery point to a Samsung OS powered behemoth on the horizon? Lets hope so.

Whilst we thought that the iPhone 4 had sucked the oxygen out of the mobile market, there still looks to be plenty of heat from rival phone makers in the coming months!

Well be sure to keep you informed of all mobile developments as they happenbe sure to keep it Omio!

Sony Ericsson X8, Yendo and Cedar: First Look

Mobile-review have posted a preview of the Sony Ericsson X8, Yendo and Cedar. Here is a video and their final impression.

I will summarize my review in a simple way. It's good to unveil your autumn products in June. The prices and products are attractive and allow the company to release the updates, decrease the prices, because we are used to overpriced models from SE. All elements of the puzzle are ready, but to be honest, it is imperative that in autumn the models should have no defects (in software and hardware), are unveiled to the public in a fascinating way and completely conform to Sony style.

P.S. If people from the Russian Representative Office of SE do not get offended with separate paragraphs of the article very soon you will read the detailed reviews of each model mentioned above.
