E-book readers one of the first consumer electronics devices to acquire true always-on connectivity
AT&T provides the 3G connectivity in the U.S.
Connected eReaders give freedom of choice ? any content, anytime, anywhere
E-book readers, which allow people to read books, magazines and newspapers electronically, are one of the first digital devices to get access to the mobile broadband network. WiFi has been incorporated into such consumer electronic devices for some time, but with access to mobile broadband, devices realize true seamless mobility.
Top consumer electronics brands are entering this emerging market. For example, with Ericsson?s (NASDAQ:ERIC) built-in mobile broadband module, Sony?s new e-book reader the Reader Daily Edition? gets access to the world?s most widely adopted 3G mobile broadband technology, HSPA.
AT&T is the U.S. carrier offering consumers the benefit of coverage and fast connection speed with the Reader Daily Edition.
Glenn Lurie, President of Emerging Devices at AT&T, says: ?Our focus is on making everything possible wirelessly. When a strong brand such as Sony sees opportunities in connecting e-book readers, we can add mobile broadband to this fast growing consumer electronics space and strengthen both industries.?
Mats Norin, Head of Mobile Broadband Modules at Ericsson, added: ?Always-on connectivity to e-books opens up new opportunities for consumers but also additional revenue streams for operators. It is exciting to see how new categories of consumer electronics devices are getting connected to the global mobile networks.?
HSPA mobile broadband technology is deployed in more than 303 networks in 130 countries in the world.
