Pico projectors for handsets to see staggering growth in 2012, says Young Optics president

Claude Hsu, president of Taiwan-based light engine maker Young Optics, has predicted that shipments of pico projectors for handsets will grow to 10-25 million units in 2012, compared to 20,000-30,000 in 2009.

For the entire pico projector market, Young Optics estimates that shipments for 2009 will only be about 170,000-180,000 units, lower than the 350,000 units predicted by some research firms, said Hsu.

Hsu said pico projector shipments for handsets will grow sharply in 2012 as major handset vendors, such as Samsung Electronics, are expected to step up efforts for the market segment.

Young Optics is a subsidiary of backlight unit (BLU) maker Coretronic.
