MediaTek chairman Tsai Ming-Kai has recently talked with Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) CEO Richard Chang in Shanghai, China for future cooperation, according to industry sources.
The two companies may partner for the production of white-box handset chipsets in China, and SMIC will continue to increase logic IC capacity to satisfy MediaTek's demand, the sources noted.
The China-based foundry has confirmed that top executives from the two companies did meet recently, but declined to reveal details of their talks.
MediaTek said that Tsai went to Beijing, China last week, and its subsidiary Analog Devices (ADI) is a client of SMIC.
MediaTek is a major customer for Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC), the sources said. If MediaTek forms a partnership with SMIC, orders for the Taiwan-based foundries may be affected, the sources commented.
MediaTek will introduce low-cost 65nm SoC MT623 latter this year targeting China's white-box handset market, added the sources.
