Demand for 3G- and WLAN-enabled devices and passive optical network (PON) equipment is rapidly expanding in China as 3G operators are focusing their efforts on improving the efficiency of their 3G networks, according to industry sources in Taiwan.
China Telecom and China Mobile both plan to purchase large volumes of WLAN access points (APs) for their respective deployments of WLAN hot-spot networks, according to previous reports.
In addition, China Mobile has also announced that it will adopt GPON (Gigabit passive optical network) as its main broadband access technology, the sources pointed out.
Meanwhile, China Unicom has recently released detailed specifications of its 11 million-line Ethernet passive optical networks (EPON), the sources noted.
However, China Unicom has reportedly has picked ZTE, Huawei Technologies and FiberHome Telecommunication Technologies as equipment providers for its EPON project, according to a Chinese-language C114.net report.
Even so, Taiwan makers still may cooperate with equipment providers to tap the emerging GPON/EPON market in China, said market sources in Taiwan.
